In a match-up that has become an annual ritual, the Lady Cardinals will battle Bunker in the Sectional round of the Class 1 state tournament. Chadwick has defeated the Lady Eagles the past two seasons en route to the Final Four in Columbia. It was a 70-39 romp for the Lady Cardinals two seasons ago, while last year’s game ended with a 58-53 Chadwick victory.
“I look forward to the challenge,” said first-year Chadwick head coach David Argo. “They are a solid team with a lot of talent. I know they have an All-State post who is very athletic and who goes inside and out. Their guards can hit the three, as well as slash to the basket. We have to contain their guards and have a spy for (Jacey) Skaggs. We have to force them to play our style and be aware of their guards.”
With only eight players on the roster, the Lady Eagles are not very deep, but do feature one of the top small school players in the state in junior Jacey Skaggs. Three seniors also play key roles, and include Britney Mathis, Samantha Anderson, and Kaycee Mead. The rest of the Bunker lineup includes Cassie Stricklin, Alyssa Wisdom, Lacey Bowen, and Ashlynn Wisdom.
The Lady Cardinal lineup is also pretty young, but includes three seniors who have been a part of two-straight Final Four teams at Chadwick in Hailey Stevens, Kailyn Rozell and Susanna Hahn. The rest of the Chadwick roster is comprised of underclassmen, including sophomores Shayna Adams, Haley Farris, Shelby Weter, and Kayla Loveland, as well as freshmen Makiya Little, Natalie Maggard and Makayla Bushong.
“We have several key players," said Argo. “We rely on everyone to win. No one is better than the next when it comes to our team. We are a young team with a lot of energy and we look forward to this game. It will help us get better.”
Is the third time the charm for Bunker, or will nemesis Chadwick end the Lady Eagles’ season in the Sectional round for the third year in a row?
“Bunker can cause a lot of issues for any team, and we have to be solid on defense and play team ball for us to have a chance to win this game,” said Argo.
